Case Consultations

Whether you are new to the field or have years of clinical experience, there are times when we all feel stuck in our work. A case may be difficult to conceptualize, sessions may begin to feel repetitive or directionless, or we notice ourselves becoming activated, uncertain or questioning our clinical judgement (hello, impostor syndrome).

Case consultations offer a space to slow down and look at what’s happening – to identify potential clinical blind spots, better understand your own reactions and gain clarity about treatment direction

CASE CONSULTATIONS

Two ways to approach consultation

Clinical consultation is intended to support clinical thinking and treatment planning. It does not constitute clinical supervision or transfer of responsibility for the treating clinician’s case.

01

Consultation on specific cases

When you feel stuck in a case

  • Briefly present relevant clinical picture – demographics, presenting concern & symptoms, treatment goals, work you’ve completed so far, questions
  • Think collaboratively about the case
  • Explore what may be happening clinically
  • Consider possible directions for treatment
02

Exploring patterns in your clinical work

When you want to focus on broader themes that repeatedly arise in your practice

  • Transference/countertransference
  • Boundaries
  • Feeling stuck or overly responsible
  • Strong reactions to particular clients or clinical situations

Sometimes this process brings awareness to something that extends beyond the clinical work itself and may be useful to explore further in your own therapy.
